On March 4 - 5, 2013 COERR Surin and COERR Aranyaprathet staff arranged an awards ceremony to the schoolchildren who won the Mine Risk Awareness Drawing Contest in two border schools: Ban Koke Rahuey and Ban Sai To Schools in Ban Kruad District, Buriram Province. After the award ceremony, there was a campaign march to raise the community awareness about mine risk.
On March 4, the Awards Ceremony was held at Ban Koke Rahuey School in which prizes were given to 9 children who won the Drawing Contest. After the awards ceremony, COERR and 80 schoolchildren together with 6 teachers launched a campaign march to spread landmine awareness to this border community for safety from landmines.
Ban Koke Rahuey village has been one of the mine risk communities in which we have found one schoolchild who had been injured by landmine.
In 2011, Kittisak Jampasorn, a kindergarten student in Ban Koke Rahuey School was spending his vacation playing in the irrigation canal near his house when he found an unknown object. He took it home and asked his mother. Since his mother did not know the object, he took it and played with it for awhile before he heard a loud noise and had his face, body and left palm injured. He was taken to hospital for treatment and was unable to attend school for some time. He is now 8 years old studying in Primary level 1. COERR is the first organization that raise mine risk awareness in this village.
